Alone

Story Behind The Song

Alone is a song that does not have a specific origin that I can put a finger on. I started this song with the chorus. The general tone and feeling of that chorus just popped into my head one day while I was playing my guitar. The rhythm and a few of the words were there ("too often mistaken...her sweet love forsaken") and the rest just slowly built off of that. I think a lot of people can relate to a song like this. We've all been there at some point in our lives (realizing that a relationship is on its last breath). In this case, though, he at least realizes that he's the one to blame. I think that adds a little twist to an otherwise common theme. Alone was my first completed/copyrighted song. For that reason, it is a very special song to me. This is also the first song I ever played for anybody. When I played it that first time for a couple of my friends they were quite complimentary and it was at that moment that I realized I was a songwriter. This was the true beginning of my music career.

Song Description

Alone is a somber song about a man who wakes up to the realization that his true love is gone for good. This song is a reflection of memories - some happy, some sad - and a dose of the cold hard truth that mistakes made will haunt him forever. As he ponders his predicament, searching for answers, he finally faces the fact that his own actions have led him to this empty, lonely place.

ALONE

As I stare at the ceiling, alone barely breathing
Awakened by my misery
Empty walls tell a story, of my fall from glory
The signs I was too blind to see

There?s no echoes of laughter, no love ever after
The silence here is killin? me
Lyin? here in my sorrow, hopin? that tomorrow
I?ll let go of her memory

Like a slow burnin? ember
It?ll haunt me forever
Too often mistaken, her sweet love forsaken
So much, that I wanted to say
My lonely heart?s breakin?, as I slowly awaken
To the truth that I drove her away

Now I think of the good times, the heartaches, the sunshine
Reflecting on my better days
Times that I didn?t hold her, things I never told her
Creep back in my mind here to stay

I can?t go back in time, Lord it?s still on my mind
How I loved her in some sorry way
As my breakdown draws nearer, the face in the mirror?s
The only one left here to blame

Like a slow burnin? ember
It?ll haunt me forever
Too often mistaken, her sweet love forsaken
So much, that I wanted to say
My lonely heart?s breakin?, as I slowly awaken
To the truth that I drove her away

My lonely heart?s breakin?, as I slowly awaken
To the truth that I drove her away
