Dance, Margie Dance

Story Behind The Song

Margie, 94, LOVES to dance. She comes to La Fortuna each Wednesday, escorted by Billy Michael, who kidded with her one day (4 years ago), while entertaining at Margie's Assisted Living Home.. he said, "I ought to bring you to open mic so you can dance for the people there..." well, if it was a bluff, Margie called it, 'Okay Billy what time are you picking me up...." and so it began Billy picks her up on his way and a ride is arranged to get her back home. SHe shows up week after week, dressed with flair, sporting a different bola scarf for each outfit it seems welcoming everyone who comes in the door.. ~ she says to me one night "you know why I'm dancing for you? because you are the only one paying attention to me". One night a friend, Dennis, unknowingly helped to plant the seed by asking me to learn Mr. Bojangles. All I could think of was Margie while I practiced that wonderful song about a man who loved to dance, and I thought... Margie deserves a song like that.. so I set about collecting "Margie" info from my fellow open-mikers and one story really touched me: Bo, came into La Fortuna to grab a quick bite and do some work he brought with him, he was in a low point in his personal life and Margie, a stranger, comes up to him, gives him a goose - and quite a goose, and with her bola scarf waving in his face says "hey big boy, I'm 93 and I'll do what I want, let's dance". Bo started coming back week after week and then he was invited to join in the music, which he hadn't played since his school days.. Bo was in a low point in life that first Wednesday, but NOW Wednesday's are the HIGH points in not just his life, but everybody's life in this wonderful group of folks who look forward to gathering each Wednesday night to enjoy the music with Billy Michael, the La Fortuna fare, the wonderful company, and of course the dancing of Margie.

Dance, Margie, Dance - Michel Rae Driscoll 11/8/2008

Your presence is our sheer delight, oh Margie, you light up the night,
Hold out your hand to anyone you like, cuz you know everything's gonna be allright
It's a precious moment in time, Margie's little hand in mine and we'll
Dance, dance, dance, Margie, dance
*Chorus A & Chorus B*
*Chorus A* (And) ((When)) She says Hey Big Boy and wraps her bola around you,
hey big boy, her feathers all around you, 94 and she'll do what she wants, and she wants to dance, *Chorus B* Dance Margie dance, Dance Margie dance, Dance Margie dance
If you don't use it you'll lose it, that's what she says
If you don't use it you'll lose it, and she ain't lost it yet, Dance Margie dance

Margie you're God's little light, who ya gonna shine on tonight
We've got nothing to lose but time, so put your little hand in mine
And we'll dance across the floor, swing 'round and come back for more
Margie's the girl, yeah she's the girl, oh she's the girl we all adore

**Chorus A only**

Bridge.... Take my hand, hold on tight and we'll dance through the night
It can't be wrong, can't be wrong when it feels so right, Oh we ain't getting any younger, and baby this day is not over
if we don't use we'll lose it, use it or lose it,
Oh Dance Margie, Dance Margie, Dance Margie Dance.......
*Partial Chorus* And she says Hey Big Boy and wraps her bola around you,
hey big boy her feathers all around you
94 and she'll do what she wants, and she wants to dance, dance Margie dance

Dance Margie dance, Dance Margie dance
yeah ((Margie dance, dance, dance, Margie dance dance dance x2)) Margie, dance..
