Janell

Story Behind The Song

I met Janell Umemoto at a party--she was cute in an artsy, eccentric way. I liked her, but I didn't have a crush on her. As I was driving back from the party, the hook for the song played in my head, so I decided to write a song around it. I gave her a tape of the song, thinking she would like it. She got scared away and avoided me, thinking that I had a huge crush on her. True story.

Lyrics

Janell
By Michael M. Masuda (lyrics written 6/15/1991)

Let me intrude upon a moment of your time
And please forgive me if my reasons have no rhyme
My mind is beaming with visions of tomorrow
The sky is traced with arrows and I follow

I touch the earth where it moves beneath me
I steal away to the edge of my dreams
As I embark on my celestial journey
Her visions lead me there

Janell Janell ? since you?ve entered my mind
Janell Janell ? I?ve always fallen behind
Oh please please tell me ? how can I reach you Janell

I turn around and dissolve without a trace
She disappears, save an image of her face
Shadows pass but shadows never linger
I fall prey helpless like a bee without a stinger

Janell Janell ? yet you save me again
Janell Janell ? as I draw near to the end
I speak no spell ? come and take me away
Janell (go)

(top instrumental line)
(interlude duet)

I wake alone and weary from her dream
My frail emotions are bursting at the seams
Am I entroubled to be following her visions
Should I surrender to her sheltering provisions

I can?t elude her for she is a part of me
I must go forward and face the reality
The arrows trailing from her eyes to mine
I can?t pretend to be blind

Janell Janell ? I was afraid of myself
Janell Janell ? and put my head on a shelf
You broke the spell ? now my intentions are clear
Janell
Janell Janell ? hold my head up high
Break out of my shell --- throw my fears to the side
Like a zephyr gazelle ? must jump over the sky to Janell
Janell Janell ? come and take me away
Sail out?
