Everything Connected

Story Behind The Song

Originally written on acoustic guitar, the song took on a new life in the studio. Both real instruments and vocals were mixed with loops to showcase the contrast of ideas in the song - digital vs reality. The song recently won The Great American Songwriting category in the Rock/Alt category.

Song Description

The song is about both the past and the future and the conflict that arises as humanity advances. It points out the value of real interactions that existed before the digital age: Real instruments vs digital sounds and face to face interactions vs communication on our phones. Technology can both separate us and unite us. The song walks that tightrope and manages that confusion. "Everything Connected" gives a commentary of modern society and offers suggestions of how we can overcome all obstacles if we look within and see we are part of an interconnected universe.

Lyrics

Turn off the power, Turn up your mind
Trade in your speakers for cellos and chimes
Hope for a smile, A text for a spine
Vintage your life for a while
Not enough brains and not enough heart
Too many ends leaving too many scars
I should have known it from the very beginning
But my head was spinning

No, no, no, no connection
You think we got
No, no, no, no connection

Wake up!
We're walking on the edge
Livin' like we're disconnected
But look close, see your reflection in
everything connected
Reach out, we're all tied together
Know that and nothing else matters
You can't stop the people or the power of
Everything connected

Get yourself moving, Let yourself go
The ones and zeros mean nothing you know
So many friends but everyone cold
What good is a desolate soul
Glued to control, Stuck all alone
So many places but nowhere a home
You won't get anything unless you've been giving
While we're livin' life vivid

No, no, no, no connection
You think we got
No, no, no, no connection

Wake up!
We're walking on the edge
Livin' like we're disconnected
But look close you can see your reflection in
everything connected
Reach out, We're all tied together
Know that and nothing else matters
You can't stop the people or the power of
Everything connected

Feel it slipping away
You try to run, But you can't escape
No other time, No other place
Everything is one, and the bonds won't ever break

Wake up!
We're walking on the edge
Livin' like we're disconnected
But look close you can see your reflection in
everything connected
Wake up!
We're walking on the edge
Livin' like we're disconnected
But look close you can see your reflection in
everything connected
Reach out, We're all tied together
Know that and nothing else matters
You can't stop the people or the power of
Everything connected
