When You're Gone

Story Behind The Song

Marc Corey Lee wrote the lyrics and music after a long night in the recording studio. He heard about the mother of one of the people in the studio that day. His mother was at the end of a long, terminal illness and was dying. Marc found the juxtaposition of the everyday life he was leading, with the heartfelt end of this woman's life to be very moving. At the same time Marc was going through the end of a difficult relationship; one that was intense and all-encompassing. Combining his emotion for the two separate events, he went home late that night from the studio and wrote this song in the early hours of the morning.

Song Description

This large ballad has a very 1950's Owen Bradley feel to it with an elegant arrangement, interesting chord progression and soaring tenor vocals. This is a slow-tempo ballad equally at home in the country genre or the pop/easy-listening style. The solo vocal is clear and crisp and the arrangement includes strings and even timpani. This is a ballad Roy Orbison would have sung in his heyday.

Lyrics

You wept and said you were sorry
That you'd been lonely for quite some time
We danced, but your hands were trembling
As you tried to a find a way to say goodbye

(Chorus)
The night drags on
With my heart barely hanging on
I'll cry all night long
But in my tears I'll try to be strong
When you're gone

Now I see your face in my shadows
And I can almost feel your hand in mine
And how I wish that I'd said I loved you
One last time before saying goodbye

Still the night drags on
With my heart barely hanging on
And I'll cry all night long
But in my tears I'll try to be strong
When you're gone

Repeat chorus
When you're gone
When you're gone
When you're gone
