Roll Red

Story Behind The Song

Bret and I had just moved and we were staying with my parents as our new situation unfolded. I was really frustrated with how slowly things were happening and one night my dad asked me if I expected people to cheer and roll out the red carpet the minute I arrived in Madison. I realized that I kind of did. One afternoon, I was home searching the internet for jobs and this melody popped into my head. I wrote the first couple of verses and the chorus and then sang the melody for bret and he went on to produce the music and feel.

Song Description

Sometimes life doesn't happen the way we think it will. Roll Red is about the disparity between my life in reality and the life I feel like is supposed to be mine. It is about hope and frustration. It is about navigating the woven paths that life seems to weave without my input and figuring out how to come to grips with the fact that "having control" is one of life's greatest illusions.

Lyrics

This carpet's sposed to roll / Roll Red
That flashbulb's sposed to pop / But instead
I'm writing this song on my kitchen table
And all I'm known for is a mind unstable

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah
Hope you dont mind if I share
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah
Hope you dont mind if I share

This mountain's sposed to move / Move there
My voice aint sposed to crack / But it did
I'm the needle in the hay that you stack the odds for
And all I've got left is my soul to sing for

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah
Hope you dont mind if I share
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah
Hope you dont mind if I share

This carpet's sposed to roll / Roll Red
That flashbulb's sposed to pop / But instead
I'm chasing down lies, memorizing fables
Watching one show cause I dont have cable

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah
Hope you dont mind if I share
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah
Hope you dont mind if I share

Its gonna take some time for me to find out
Who I'm sposed to be
Its gonna take some time for me to try it out
And swim that open sea
Its gonna take some time for me to find out
Who I'm sposed to be
Its gonna take some time for me to try it out
And swim that open sea
In time, I'll find out
Who I'm born to be
In time, I'll find out
What you see in me

Writing this song on my kitchen table
Chasing down lies, memorizing fables
Going for broke cause I know your faithful

Yeah, Yeah, Yeah
Hope you dont mind if I share
Yeah, Yeah, Yeah
Hope you dont mind if I share
