I'm just a fan

Story Behind The Song

I wrote this song to submit to a songwriter's contest requesting tribute songs following Johnny Cash's death. I believe it does a pretty good job of "summing up" Johnny Cash as a person, singer, and a very unique star.

I wrote this song as a tribute to Johnny Cash's life and career.

I'm Just A Fan
(A Tribute to Johnny Cash)
Written and Copyright by: Lisa A. Courtney
October 21,2003
*note a change in one word in the chorus, not reflected on CD

1st Verse:

I was driving down the road
Listening to the radio
When the news reporter said,
"The Man in Black is dead."

My mind raced back in time
When he was in his prime
"Ring of Fire" was hot,
And I liked,"A Thing Called Love."

Chorus:

I'm Just a Fan
*Of (It's) the legacy of the Man...
In Black.

2nd Verse:

The women loved him, too
He was dark and mysterious
Like a knight in shining armor
Rushing in to rescue us.

Instead, he hailed from Arkansas
He came from humble means,
But his Mama always said," Son,
Hold onto you dreams."

Chorus:

I'm Just a Fan
*Of(It's) the legacy of the man...
In Black.

3rd Verse:

He was an independent man,
He played by his own rules,
A Cowboy and a Gambler, Patriotic, too
He stood for the Red, White, and Blue.

But when I try to sum him up
It's impossible you see,
I think he said it best,
"Hello, I'm Johnny Cash."

Bridge:

Tag could actually be the Bridge instead

Chorus:

I'm Just a Fan
*Of (It's) the legacy of the Man...
In black.

Tag:

He was just a man...
But, Oh, What a man
And that's enough for me.

Fade/Repeat until end:

I'm just a Fan
Of the Man in Black...

I'm just a Fan
Of the Man in Black...

**In the chorus the word "Of" the legacy, needs to be changed to "It's" the legacy or To the legacy.
