Story Behind The Song
I had the title and first line of this song before the September 11th tragedy. The question then was, should I write in any reference to 9/11? My husband reminded me that "poetry is making the cosmic simple and the simple cosmic", so I decided to keep the song as a pure lovesong. But when viewed through the lens of September 11th, it takes on a much deeper meaning. It could be used in a movie or documentary either about the terrorist attack or with the attack as a background, and yet it can still stand completely on its own. I think people want to deal with 9/11 on a personal as well as global level, and this is the song for that.

Lyrics
Don't say good-bye in New York,
not when the leaves start to fall.
We walked her streets with our fingers entwined.
I was yours and you were mine.
I won your heart in New York.
Here where the muse weaves her spell.
We felt her song and our spirits were high.
We would never say good-bye.
Some other town, some other ground, some other sky,
could be a space for good-bye.
Not this place we loved so much.
She became a part of us.
She is me, she is you.
You broke my heart in New York,
just when the trees shed their tears.
I cried my own, thinking back on our lie:
we would never say good-bye
in New York.
