Don't Walk Away

Story Behind The Song

I was camping and a couple came over to me while I played church tunes on my guitar, I was embarrassed by playing church tunes so I hid them away. The next day the husband was killed by a tree in a storm, I saw the aftermath. Overcome by guilt and wonder and God's message to me, I wrote this song on the way home from the morgue, where I learned that neither of them believed in God.

Lyrics

Don't Walk Away
Copyright 1998 words and music by Laura McCandliss

They were a fun loving couple away at a park,
Came over to listen to music I played
Afraid to show glory and share in Christ's story,
I hid my scriptures away
At the crash of lightning, the fall of a tree,
She felt life slip out of his hand
The fun loving couple
Is now down to one left trying to understand.

And I can only pray
Don't walk away, walk with Him,
Don't walk away, walk with Him,
God will supply you with His healing ways
Don't walk away, don't walk away
Don't walk away.

I'll never see that couple together again,
But I can't help but wonder why
God put me in position to make a decision,
In my faithfulness would I try
To help them be broken by the gospel spoken,
Or would I have hidden my faith?
I chose the latter, thinking it wouldn't matter,
What difference could it make?

And all I can say
Don't walk away, walk with Him,
Don't walk away, walk with Him,
God's there to lead if we choose to obey,
Don't walk away, don't walk away
Don't walk away.

Winding and twisting, thoughts in my head,
Could I turn time the other way
I would have changed the tunes and the things that were said,
I would have reached my hands out to pray.
So I sit here in wonder, I sit here in guilt
Didn't reach out to him, didn't reach out to her
I remember the thunder, the blood that was spilt
And I hear God whisper:

"Don't walk away, walk with Me..."
"Don't walk away, walk with Me..."
"I will supply you with right words to say,
Don't walk away"

Don't walk away, walk with Him,
Don't walk away, walk with Him,
God's there to lead if we choose to obey,
Don't walk away, don't walk away
Don't walk away.

Don't walk away.
