Chikatetsu III

Story Behind The Song

CHIKATETSU, the "underground iron", the subway system that is the heart of public transportation in the large cities of Japan. But this music is about those hyper-cultural and psycho-emotional spaces common to all aspects of modern life: isolation, solitude within crowds, private moments of sentiment, thought, feeling, memory, place, and the relationship of this highly individual experience to society and an ever-changing 21st century world.

Song Description

Train track sounds begin to enter the field of attention, soon to be joined by a glitchy percussion beat. Bittersweet synth lines paint broad strokes across an imaginal sky glimpsed between buildings. There is a sense of calm solitude, not quite lonely, but not quite content either. A sense of searching gives way to an opening of the track sounds as they morph into beautiful ride cymbals glistening in the light. A sensual duet of acoustic bass and electric piano explore tertial harmonies and melodies of a zen like simplicity before stating their final notes. The cymbals crunch down once again to become the long train tracks.
