Dandelion

Story Behind The Song

About Dandelion by Katie Burns We walked down to the little creek by Shake Rag and played all day in the October sun. We skipped stones and climbed the lime stone walls. It felt lonely but a good kind of lonely. Like we could say hello to ourselves and to the world around us. I sat down to write a song about Mineral Point last October, and my hundred year old house came to mind. The glass in the window pane is starting to run. The old pine floor creeks and groans. Being here reminds me of all the people who lived in our little town before me. I think of the children who picked dandelions, made wishes and skipped stones under the beautiful starry night sky. There is a unique closeness to the present and also to the past that hushes over this town like no other. The chorus sings, "We are cut from a different cloth. Houses from a different walk. The truth is when you fall. So small yet so big. The things that you did." The world outside seems so big and powerful yet it is also vulnerable to the slightest breeze. We are so small yet the things we do matter to ourselves and the people around us. Deep down we as humans need to be seen and heard. Whether we achieve something great or fall on our face, we live to be understood. Which is why we write songs, paint pictures, make pottery, wave at the passer by and smile. I think living here inspires us to truly embrace our humanity no matter how big or how small things may seem.

Lyrics

Dandelion
by Katie Burns

You pick a parasol dandelion
close your eyes
make a permanent wish with a broken sigh

When breezes blow the world seems
it could change
the vulnerability
can't sustain

We are cut from a different cloth
Houses from a different walk
The truth is when we fall
So small yet so big
The things that you did
That you did

You skip stones over a rushing creek
climb a pathway to a crumbling street

When earth and dirt meet in a moonlit sky
Stars go back to sleep and we fall behind

We are cut from a different cloth
Houses from a different walk
The truth is when we fall
So small yet so big
The things that you did
That you did

We are we are
We are we are

We are cut....
