Hero

Story Behind The Song

I wrote the song from the perspective of the girl I was in high school. I put it out on my YouTube channel with a video of all my younger fans lip-syncing and being their own heroes. I have turned this song into an anti-bullying movement and my mantra. It is Project Semicolon's theme song, won the Songdoor International Songwriting Contest for 2015, and was nominated for an International Independent Music Award. It has collectively been streamed and sold over 10,000,000 times.

Song Description

I was bullied a lot in high school and I wrote this song from that girl's perspective. We've all, at some point, had to face the music and be our own heroes. This is an anthemic pop anthem that we all can relate to, and anywhere it's heard many preteens will already recognize it or want to know more about it. It's extremely catchy, it is a power pop song and still has some subtle acoustic/country instrumental lines.

Lyrics

I walk alone with no wings to carry me home
You don't even know, you don't even know
And I hate the fall cause it takes it you with it, shoot me down again
You're colder then the snow, I'm used to being on my own

You don't own me just because you made me cry a thousand times
This is me clearing my own dark skies

You are not your mistakes, you are not your past
You are not the kids in high school who said you'll never last
You are not your parents, you are not your goodbyes
So before you give up this fight I hope you realize
You can be your own hero

She's got her head down on her desk, she doesn't see it yet
But one day she'll be grown, this is just a stepping stone
He's locked in his bedroom thinking pain is all there is
It's all he's ever known, they beat him down so low

They don't own you just because they made you cry a thousand times
Trust me when I say you're gonna be fine

You are not your mistakes, you are not your past
You are not the kids in high school who said you'll never last
You are not your parents, you are not your goodbyes
So before you give up this fight I hope you realize
You can be your own hero

Strong pain builds strong hearts
This is where your life starts
We are clean slates and zeroes
Becoming our own heroes

Strong pain builds strong hearts
This is where your life starts
We are clean slates and zeroes
Becoming our own heroes

Strong pain builds strong hearts
This is where your life starts
We are clean slates and zeroes
Becoming our own heroes

We are not our mistakes, we are not our past
We are not the kids in high school we used to be, we used to be

We are fierce and mighty, we are saying goodbye
To the people who thought we'd never realize
We can be our own heroes

I walk alone while my own strength carries me home
You don't even know, I am my own hero
