Battle Cry

Story Behind The Song

I wrote this for the end of a YouTube series about a father and son relationship. I put myself in the character's shoes... someone who has been emotionally abused by one of their parents and is finally breaking free. The song sold over 7,000 on iTunes, got to the top of the singer/songwriter iTunes charts, and has over 10,000,000 collective streams. It's extremely cinematic and epic, which is how we made it.

Song Description

"Battle Cry" is an epic ballad that maintains its acoustic, almost trance-like pace and melody. It has a full orchestral score and many instrumental parts, and is definitely a tear-jerker. We've all had someone in our lives that no matter what we did they didn't love, respect or appreciate us when we wanted them to. This is about finding your own voice and knowing that its more important to do that and say goodbye to someone you love than spend your whole life trying to please them.

Lyrics

I tried to make you proud
You said I had my head in the clouds
I've spent a lifetime
Stuck in the same lines

Gathered up each grain of sand
Built my castle in your hands
Then I spent a lifetime
Trying not to cry

Look at me now
The diamonds I've found
This might not last forever
But it might do something better

I believe this is bigger than you and me
You will see the crowds swelling in revelry
I am ready and if that means goodbye
Then it's time to fly into the light
Nothing but sky and this strong battle cry

You telling me I'd never make it
Left me needing to prove you mistaken
I've spent a lifetime
Waiting for my time

There was something in the wreckage
A tiny piece of who I knew I'd be
I'm setting it free

Look at me now
The diamonds I've found
This might not last forever
But it might do something better

I believe this is bigger than you and me
You will see the crowds swelling in revelry
I am ready and if that means goodbye
Then it's time to fly into the light
Nothing but sky and this strong battle cry

Stopped asking questions
Stopped asking permission
Now I won't come undone or rebel
And all that's left are the stories we tell

I believe this is bigger than you and me
You will see the crowds swelling in revelry
I am ready and if that means goodbye
Then it's time to fly into the light
Nothing but sky and this strong battle cry
