Done and Dry

Story Behind The Song

It was a collaboration between myself (Jonathan Hamler - guitar, bass, keys, production) and a good friend and singer, Jonny Andre.

Song Description

This is a soulful pop tune incorporating a rich array of vocal harmonies and live instrumentation I wrote for my degree portfolio and produced on my iMac in my room. I was aiming for a natural, organic, live band sound. I wrote and produced the outline of the whole track before bringing in vocalist Jonathan Andre with whom I collaborated on the lyrics and melody. My compositional process was fairly experimental- I'd program a drumbeat and set it to loop over which I'd improvise a bassline, for example, until I found a part I liked. This process was repeated for the other instruments and I reworked the structure many times until I was pleased with it.

Lyrics

Lyrics: 'Done & Dry'

Is it too late to test this
Shall we even try
What we begun has not become done & dry (too late, oooh)
Is it too late to throw back
To a simpler time
Just say the words (too late, ooh)

Should we, could we, let it be, just
Left said and done in the past
Or will we regret missed opportunities
Do you believe in fate? or is it just too late

Is it too late for us now
Has time left us behind
Simply and utterly, done and dry
Is friends the better option, can we be just friends
Maybe time will never tell

Should we, could we, let it be just,
Left said and done in the past
Or will we regret this (Opportunity)

But I must entertain the thought of
People's living tendency to
Live their lives spent in the past so
Maybe we should refrain
Look forward, let it be just
Tell ourselves it's all too late, and
I must entertain the thought of
People booked in therapy to
Recall sordid memories (passed, oh)
Maybe we should refrain
Look forward endlessly, just
Tell ourselves it's all too late

It is too late now
Shall we even try
What we begun, has not become
Done & Dry
Is it too late to throw back
To a simpler time
Just say the words (Too late, oh)

Is it too late for us now
Has time left us behind
Is friends the better option
Can we be just friends?
Maybe time will never tell (too late, oh)
