Story Behind The Song
I wrote the first verse of this song late, late one night in an old, creepy farmhouse in Glengarry County. The notion of a ghostly visitor just stepping in from the night seemed very likely at the time. I wrote the song around that image.
Song Description
A person up late at night revisiting past regrets, is confronted by an eerie visitor who invites him to either drown bad memories or something more corporal. Actually, the message is positive even though it's told through a number of dark, evocative images.

Lyrics
Stones
Who's that knocking at my door again?
One, two, three at four AM
I don't ask him but he comes on in
Anyway
He sits right down in my kitchen chair
Draws his fingers through his thin, white hair
He's got something that he's gonna share
With me
He says, "Boy, ain't you been to bed?
You hair's a mess and your eyes are red.
Have you been waiting for someone instead
Of me?
"Well, you'll be waiting a long, long time
And it's too late to change your mind
But you can't live with what's behind
You now.
Chorus
"Let's go beyond the old mill pond
To where the water runs deep and slow
Those stones will drown your bones
If you don't let them go"
I say, "I've seen you before
Lurking by my cabin door
Drawing me to the other shore
At night"
He says, "Son, it ain't me
Pulling you to'ards eternity
That's nothing but your memory
Each time"
Chorus
"Let's go beyond the old mill pond
To where the water runs deep and slow
Those stones will drown your bones
If you don't let them go
Those stones will drown your bones
If you don't let them go"
