Lyrics

Before We Knew Who We Were

Verse I
I couldn't watch you walk away
It hurt too much to see you crying
I thought we'd make this happen someday
But we didn't work

Though we were closer than friends
We knew our plans would come between us
You made me a better man
Now every time
I picture you in my mind
I remember..

Chorus
That was you and I, running on the wind
Laughing up a storm, our love was being born
We would talk for hours, like there was no time
That was you and I, that was you and I
Before we knew who we were

Verse II
If you wonder why I never write
It's cause I still have feelings for you
and I hear you're with a great guy
but he better see
just how lucky he must be to have found you

and if things ever change
You'll know exactly where to find me
at the pier where we first kissed
and I'll run to you
Catch you in my arms, Like I used to

Chorus
That was you and I, running on the wind
laughing up a storm, our love was being born
We would talk for hours, like there was no time
that was you and I, that was you and I
Before we knew who we were

Bridge
I could be the dad, always on the go
you can be the perfect housewife every man's ever hoped for
briefcase, fresh bread, black coffee, get me fed
you can raise the kids, blow a kiss through the screen door
but changing from the start, we would fall apart,
turning into the strangers we knew we always really were

Chorus II
That was you and I, running on the wind
laughing up a storm, our love was being born
We would talk for hours, like there was no time
that was you and I, that was you and I
Before we knew who we were

That was you and I, running different ways
crying up a storm, our love was slowly torn
we would plan our lives like the fools we were
that was you and I, that was you and I
Before we knew who we were

Outro
I wish you the best, I trully do
For all that you taught me
I need to thank you
Thank you for the good times
thank you for the bad
you've given me some of the best days
I've ever had

good development
good story line

Clear and concise, able to understand path of the music. Hook was fine. Tempo felt good. Overall could easily be marketable

Great mix, with nice layered vocals and a strong arrangement with good contrast between the different sections of the song. There's also some endearing storytelling to the lyric. Possibly the vocal is a little lost on the choruses, but that might also be just me trying to find some way to help you make the song better than it already is :) Despite this being a little too poppy/sentimental for my personal taste, it is an excellent piece of songwriting, with performance and production to match - keep up the good work!

This is one of the best Pop Alternative Songs I have ever reviewed. The first part of the song almost reminded me of Simon and Garfunkel. But you have your own voice and I love it. Very sweet tenor, very expressive and the raw and beautiful emotion expressed in this song really comes through. Excellent hook! I knew because I started singing along with it the second time. Terrific word pictures, too. I absolutely love the concrete images, the first kiss on the pier and the bridge WOW. The amazing clarity of the pictures of what "could have been" were so originally expressed. The bridge was incredible (briefcase, homemade bread, the kids, the wife, kiss thru the screen door...I love songwriting like that. Stuff you can sink your ears into! Can you tell that I was impressed? Instrumentation and harmonies were impeccable, very tight band held together by an excellent drummer that knew when to kick back. I can tell you really worked hard on this one.
