Lyrics
ROCK (spoken)
The word Homosexual is defined as "a member of the genus homo, having a sexual orientation towards persons of the same sex". Some say homosexuality stems from nothing but myth and superstition. Yet the belief that a human can be turned into a "homo" has persisted from the dark ages to this very time. Today, with compassion and acceptance, all types of people can embrace diversity. But not so long ago, revealing your true self to the world, could be really, really scary!
(Two backup singers enter, male cast members (in drag?), Jack and Gilbert. Old Rock removes his ascot, smoking jacket and grey wig to become young Rock Dale, troubled teen. The music from the record player swells to fill the entire theatre. The stage is now flooded with wild-colored disco lighting.)
SONG: I WAS A TEENAGE HOMO (Rock, with Jack & Gilbert)
ROCK
Confused, misunderstood
Teased by my neighborhood
Felt like I did not belong
I danced to my different drum
Waited for role models to come
Heroes to make me strong
JACK & GILBERT
This rebel had a mighty cause
ROCK
Stuck in Kansas, but dreaming of Oz
My childhood wish
To dish out the dish
The freedom to swish
ALL
I was a teenage homo
I was a teenage homo
(Dance break)
ROCK I kept it quite hush hush
Cute boys might make me blush
I tried so hard to conform
My secret I dared not speak
Who would wanna be called a freak?
My soul, a raging storm
JACK & GILBERT
Repression was a heavy load
ROCK
Ticking bomb that's about to explode
The world wants to sneer,
I'm living in fear,
I'm here and I'm queer
ALL
I was a teenage homo
I was a teenage homo
I was a teenage homo
I was a teenage homo!
