Cavalry

Story Behind The Song

This song was written about a deeply personal experience of loss, realization and acceptance of the end of a long-term relationship. It was the last in a series of songs from the album "Great Expectations" that dealt with the stages of relationship loss - denial, anger, grief, acceptance and rebirth.

Song Description

"Cavalry" is a song about the realization that a relationship has reached its natural end. One partner has realized this while the other is still trying to bargain and to dream of "saviours" of the relationship. The first partner is challenging this by saying that no "Superman", "Cavalry", "Master plan" or "Magic Carpet Ride" will save them. They plead that "a caged bird will only sing sad songs to you" and to "let it free, let it fly". The song ends on a positive note, with the possibility of "when the sun returns, we might find each other again".

I just don't know what to say
I'm at a loss just what to say
I don't feel anymore
I can't give anymore

This well has bled bone dry
Yet you ask for just one more try
I can't give any more from these hands

Can you tell the wrong from right and
Which one we should stand and fight for
Do we see anymore
Can we love anymore

We both were caught in this maze
At first it's fun 'til you're lost for days
I don't want any more of this game

There's no Superman
There won't be any cavalry
Rushing to save you and me

There's no master plan
There's no magic carpet ride
There's nowhere for you and me to hide

I just don't know what to think
Can you please tell me what to think
I don't know anymore
I don't believe anymore

The leaves have turned and this chill won't end
You still think summer's round the bend
I can't give anymore to this game

Let it go, let it go
Why can't you let it go?
A caged bird will sing only sad songs to you

Let it free, let it fly
Let these hearts open wide
When the sun returns they might find each other again
