I Do

Story Behind The Song

I wrote this song for my parent's 40th wedding anniversary. I remember singing it to them with my daughter Miranda, who was 10 years old at the time. Since their 40th this song has made it through several re-writes. "I Do" is essentially a song about the commitment found in those two words. So many people in today's world take these words of promise too lightly. My parents didn't! Let's face it, there's no marriage that is easy. My wife and I just celebrated 17 years together and we both know that it takes work. "I Do" is a commitment that no matter how hard it gets, you stick with it. God has blessed your marriage whether you recognize it or not! Marriage is not a promise that it will be easy. Remember, He's more interested in our character than our comfort. Imagine yourself in the place of grandparents all over the world who are living in glory because their marriage stood the test of time!

Lyrics

You made the vow
Before God and family
Two simple words to say
But hard to really mean
The smell of roses filled the air
And there were bridesmaids
With pinned up hair
First house together
A baby on the way
Livin' paycheck to paycheck
And relying on God's grace
Rockin' baby in the chair
Those late night lullabies filled the air
"I do" meant something lasting to you
"I do" meant struggles that you'd make it through
"I do" meant children looking up at you
God's blessings of love held true
When you said "I do"
Big Wheels and Barbies
Turned to teenage appetites
When they missed their curfews
You waited up all night
The boys were looking debonair
The girl's prom dresses
With pinned up hair
"I do" meant something lasting to you
"I do" meant struggles that you'd make it through
"I do" meant children growing up too soon
God's blessings of love held true
When you said "I do"
I D O
The promise that you made
Holds stronger every day
You taught us how to love
And we carry it with us today
You made the vow
Before God and family
You see love around you
From atop the family
There's celebration in the air
And grand-daughters with pinned up hair
"I do" means something lasting to you
"I do" means struggles that you made it through
"I do" means one heart made out of two
God's blessings of love held true
When you said "I do"
