Come To America

Story Behind The Song

I wrote the song when I adopted my daughter from India. I was exposed to many cultures during the process and had the opportunity to talk with people in various embassies and immigration offices. Some of the people I met were desperate to come to this country and believed in the American dream.

Song Description

The song is an invitation to people who are oppressed or anyone who wants to experience the mixed bag culture of America. It's a welcome to anyone who would like to be part of this country and. I wrote it specifically for my daughter when we were going through the adoption process to bring her here from India.

Lyrics

Bring me your tired who yearn to be free
And I will give hope to the hopeless of thee
That's what the sign says, the one that we hung
In New York on the island when the country was young
It says

Come To America, come hear the noise
The passion, the color of the American voice
I've seen the promise in the dawns' early light
I've heard the miracle coming to me tonight

I've been to the harbor where the green lady stands
Holding her light high up in her hand
I've been to places where the people would give
All that they have just to come here to live

Come To America, come hear the noise
The passion, the color of the American voice
I've seen the promise in the dawns' early light
I've heard the miracle coming to me tonight

There's them who will tell you that the whole things gone wrong
There's them who will say it wont last very long
But it's easy to tear it down
It's easy to lie
To say the dream's over but it's not and here's why
'Cause there's a brittle brown paper
In a little glass case
That people still line up to read
There's a star spangled poet in the midst of a war
Whose question keeps planting the seed
Oh, say can you see?

I've seen the promise in the dawn's early light
I've seen the miracle coming to me

Come To America, come hear the noise
The passion, the color of the American voice
I've seen the promise in the dawns' early light
I've heard the miracle coming to me tonight
