Story Behind The Song
I was living in northern Minnesota. The lake unthawing in early spring seemed an apt metaphor for the relationship between me and my daughter thawing as well. It was a dangerous and important time. She's doing great now.
Song Description
The insidious thing about depression is how clever it's victims are in disguising it - especially teens who may distance themselves from their parents anyway. Sometimes it's just better to give up, in a way, say "I love you" and be patient.

Lyrics
I Love You, Annie
Verse 1:
I see you on a frozen lake; I want to walk to you.
You're smiling and I think, "what does she mean?"
The ice is dangerously thin with just a step or two,
So, this is what it's like, the dark side of sixteen.
Chorus:
I love you, Annie!
That's all that's safe to say.
I love you, Annie!
Believe a mother's heart before it breaks.
Verse 2:
It's getting colder on the lake, I see you're shivering, too.
We'll have to cross this hazardous terrain.
If we wait until it's warm, we'll both fall through
I don't have to understand; you don't need to explain.
Chorus:
I love you, Annie!
That's all that's safe to say.
I love you, Annie!
Believe a mother's heart before it breaks.
Bridge:
There you are and here am I.
Can't think of what to do.
The only thing I know for sure is Annie, I love you!
Chorus:
I love you, Annie!
We're gonna work this through.
I love you, Annie!
"Mom," she says, "I love you, too."
