Search and Rescue

Story Behind The Song

I was 20, had recently gotten out of school--by the skin of my teeth--and went hitchhiking far and wide doing the "trying-to-find-me-thing." I was actually in Montana, hitch'in through to Denver from Coeur d' Alene, Idaho. I got a ride with a girl who, eventually, got me to Denver, right to my old front door. There was a blizzard and it seemed that everything that could go wrong did. The storm just never let up. So she inched her way up an fenceline road and parked against a high berm--waiting the storm out..This girl was indelibly smart; a countrygirl,a scamp and a beauty--naturally. We muddled through (I was a basketcase and, hadn't but a stratch of experience in lovmaking. For that I deeply respect the girl, I mean, for her tanacity and good nature. We exchanged high praises and hopes for one another: "-you-do-well" salutations. She, among a host of other girls kept me going, looking for Miss Right. In '75 there was a lot of people searching for meaning, stuff like that. I was on that wagon, too, but I had expectations of finding the girl to fit (snugly) the golen slipper theme I had etched in my mind--suffice it to say I searched long and hard, always hoping, always confident it would happen. This mindset took/takes a great deal of fortitude as there a good deal of hopfuls and there were surely times when I shelved my bags and took a breather. This to say I hung around, for a timeknowing it wasn't gonna last, but.... Be all that as it may, and as it was, I still hope for that just right lady. Some would say it's a long shot. Maybe so. I got plenty of time. Tic, Tic, Tic. And the past is nothing more than a thought, an ever-lov'in embrace that is there to set the course you're (I'm) runn'in.

Song Description

It is an ever consuming, heartfelt desire that forever pervades and impels this guy to carry on, to go where he has never been before. Something or someone somewhere sometime ago told this searcher that a near-magic relationship/experience awaits him. Seeking is hoping. Seeking i better than standing still and/or being content with what you have--no matter how negitive that might be. The grass is greener......That's what comes to mind when I think of this somg. Hell, when I think of me.

Search and Rescue

At a stop near Butte, Montana

On a moonlit winter's night

I met a could-be other half

Would this girl change my life?

Alone and feeling desperate

I had been this way so long

Like many men, I'd try again,

I'd sing her my soulmate's song

Could we two be meant to be?

As one, as lifetime friends?

Please let it be, please say to me

Your search has reached the end

So many chance encounters

My emotions ebb and flow

Ebb and flow til that one hello

And I'll know, yes I'll know, I will know

Sing me my song sweet Baby

To a bright new melody

Teach me the cadence with lov'in and patience

'Til we soar in ecstasy

Chorus:

I'll seek for you my lover true

My companion, my friend, my wife

Make the best of what I've grown to be

And mend this lonesome life

To ere they say is human

And my stories common, too

Yet common too--you've got to be true

To get what you are due
No Chorus at End
