Needles and Haystacks

Song Description

The search for somebody who has left the warm nest and flown into the world's open jaws. And all because country living was too calm for her.

Lyrics

Calm country living
Cool country air
Old waters flow on and on
Calm country living
Too calm for her
Now she's gone.

Calm country living
Cool country ways
Let you know just where you are
Calm country living
Counting the days
She's gone far.

When the warm nest's unwinding
When the early bird's flown
Into the world's open jaws
When it's needles and haystacks
And you're on your own
Clutch at straws.

Bright city living
Brisk city air
He looks for her all over town
Bright city living
But she's not there
He goes down.

Bright city living
Brisk city blues
Hurting the soles of his feet
Bright city living
Leaving no clues
To her street.

When the warm nest's unwinding
When the early bird's flown
Into the world's open jaws
When it's needles and haystacks
And you're on your own
Clutch at straws.

Calm country living
Out on a limb
Old waters flow on and on
Calm country living
Too calm for him
Now she's gone.

Calm country living
Cool country ways
Let you know just where you are
Calm country living
Counting the days
She's gone far.

When the warm nest's unwinding
When the early bird's flown
Into the world's open jaws
When it's needles and haystacks
And you're on your own
Clutch at straws.

When the warm nest's unwinding
When the early bird's flown
Into the world's open jaws
When it's needles and haystacks
And you're on your own
Clutch at straws.

Nice traditional sounding folk song. Very pleasant listen.
Nicely enhanced by the backing vocal! Definitely bring to mind a different time and space. Classic Folk. The vocal in some spots reminded me of Pete Seeger.

I really enjoyed the subtle yet driving guitar work. Very talented guitar player. The recording really captures the song and gives it a feel. I thought the harmonies were fantastic and helped get through the chorus. Low harmonies are much harder in my opinion and these are perfectly executed. My favorite part was when the instruments dropped out near the end, gave it a pub song feel.

A fine melody with unusual lyrics.

Lovely guitar intro & picking! Excellent lyric writing. You are quite the wordsmith! You've got some really original phrases that show a lot of freshness....like "needles and haystacks, jaws and straws, warmness unwinding" (good alliteration). I like the soft and mellow tone of your voice and nice guitar work. The simple production suits the song well. Nice harmonic at the end. Keep up the good work!

Nice feel and sweet song about country living

what a beautiful song! it took me away to a different place -it affected me.
