Derailed Feat. Cold

Story Behind The Song

Derailed is a great example of a track that started out with a solid footing but continually improved and became much better as production progressed. The song was written by guitarist Ben Misikin several years before being produced. In 2012 it was produced at the bands previous recording studio. After connecting with current producer Aaron Zinsmeister at White Raven audio, it was clear the band needed to start over with tracking to achieve a quality product. Derailed represents that progress. To make things even more interesting, HNR Rhythm guitarist Jason Weister lucked out by chance to connect with guitarist Zak Gilbert from Cold who was selling some stage gear on Facebook. Cold was a very influential band in Jason's younger years and after befriending Gilbert and conversing, the band threw out the idea of Gilbert being on a track as a featured artist. Gilbert was given multiple choices and liked Derailed the best. His liking to the song was also followed by award winning singer Scooter Ward, who also agreed to be a part of the project. In late 2014 Ben and Jason flew to Jacksonville, FL to begin tracking with Cold on Derailed. Scooter Ward guest vocals appear through out the song with harmonies and the entire second verse, while Gilberts guitar influences can be felt with the first half of the solo and other Whammy influenced notes heard throughout the song. The unique is experience in tracking with a multi million record selling band is one the members of He-Nis-Ra will never forget. It especially was a highlight of the music career of Jason Weister to date, who was again heavily influenced by Cold growing up. Credit also goes to Aaron Zinsmeister for the various keyboard tracks throughout the song, including the melodic outro that can be heard fading as the song ends.

Song Description

Derailed marks one of He-Nis-Ra's most cherished accomplishments to date. The track poses philosophical questions about understanding reality and uncertainty in the face of a falling out. Everyone has had a falling out with a person in their life and often times we are left wondering why things happened the way they did, how people can leave freely without guilt or remorse and an uncertainty behind wondering if things really have to be accepted the way they are instead of the way we wish they could be. We hoped to be able to reach fans that can relate to the lyrics who have been through rough times with people in their life, whether it was a family member, spouse, etc. Some things are never really figured out, and we all have to take some of that sorrow to the grave without ever fully understanding why things are the way they are.

Lyrics

What was I supposed to find the night I saw you leave?
Was it my fault alone or something I cannot be?
Colliding differences that drew the line between.
I think we were destined to try (tell me)
Cause I can see differently, because of what you don't know
If it's done to you I won't let it be.

Why is it so hard to grasp what's truly real?
If it wasn't for me, if it wasn't for me
You would have faced your death, and left me in your debt.

Why was I left behind when you got away for free?
Hung out to dry you took all away from me.
Forced to walk the world like a mistaken dream.
Woke up to find that my dream is reality.

Cause I can see differently, because of what you don't know
If it's done to you, I'll let you grieve.

Why is it so hard to grasp what's truly real?
If it wasn't for me, if it wasn't for me
You would have faced your death, and left me in your debt.

We'll part our separate ways.
You can take it, take it to the grave.
Why is it so hard to grasp what's truly real?
If it wasn't for me, if it wasn't for me you would have faced your death.
Now I'll take it to the grave.
Why is it so hard to grasp what's truly real?
Take it to the grave.
Why is it so hard to grasp what's truly real?
Grasp what's truly real.

Take it to the grave.
To the
To the grave.
