Story Behind The Song
I focused on the first few weeks after a fictitious breakup and used elements of disbelief, heartbreak, loneliness, longing and eventually defiance.
Originally written as a vocal & piano (with apreggiated 9ths), Joe came up with this remix, which ended up usurping the original mix.
Song Description
painfully re-tracing the events of a break-up that you didn't see coming and when trying to do everything you can to make things right (again) doesn't work, picking yourself up and moving on with your life and its aspirations.

Lyrics
All I know is time was on our side
But something changed
You chose to run and hide
You've gone away and left me on my own
So I sit at home
Waiting by the telephone
To see if you'll call me again
And say you've changed your mind
I know it sounds contrived
Now everywhere I look I see your face
It reminds me how
You've left and empty space
within my heart and deep inside my soul
Your warm embrace replaced by lonely cold
You said, "You won't see me again!"
I saw it in your eyes
You had it all contrived
I've only once
Confided in someone
And it was with you
Look at the good it's done
Have you left me for somebody new?
But if you should see me again
With tears filling my eyes
I swear it's not contrived at all
You've been gone
For weeks I've sat here now
All alone and wanting you back somehow
Thought of the ways
I might win back your heart
Maybe with a song
Wondering how we fell apart
If you'd listen to me again
I think you'd realize
My words are not contrived at all
I've only once
Confided in someone
And that was with you
For all the good it's done
Because now your with somebody new
But if you should see me again
You'll see that I've survived
I know it sounds contrived
And when I'm on TV someday
You'll know that I've arrived
But that was all contrived, you know
