Fall Drive

Story Behind The Song

A great tradition on Long Island, NY is to take a drive out east in the fall to the pumpkin fields and farm stands. There are places to stop and get donuts and pies and fruit and vegetables. There are spooky corn mazes and haunted houses. Every year I do this and this is my remembrance of many different fall drives collected into one song.

Song Description

On a perfect fall day two people go for a drive in the country and see pumpkin fields, farm stands, the sunset, etc. They are very happy with each other and with the scenery and feelings as they drive out and then back home.

Lyrics

You and I heading out
We've got nowhere to go, but the day calls
Sweet smell of fall in the air

Pumpkins litter the fields
Muddy shoes on the mats of the car floor
Never a more perfect day

Tires crunching the sand on the roads heading east
Passing vineyards and farms, busy harvest this year
Rays of sunlight reflecting off shiny red steel

At a stand by the road
Cider donuts and pies next to sweet corn
Everything born of the earth

Setting sun, orange sky
Heading into the night in the chill air
Feeling you there in the dark

Moonlight casts chilling shadows among naked trees
Winter's waiting nearby, seeping in with the breeze
Colors turning from green, yellow, orange and red

You and I heading home
Turn the heater on, talk about some day
Making our way . . .

heading home

in the dark
