Fishin' With Jim

Story Behind The Song

My Dad beat me as a child and it started with this simple request to go fishin. The song is very accurate in it's descriptions and depictions. Virtually everything stated here is how it happened.

Song Description

Based on a true story. My Dad over reacted to a request I had to go fishing with my best friend. I sang it with a country voice and feel in order to submit it to this catagory. I'm a huge Beatles fan and alot of my songs sound like the Beatles. I write melodies more Lennonesque (without many leaps in the pitches)

Lyrics

fishin? with Jim

VERSE

D C
Memories of yesterdays
G D
Haunt me from my past
D C
painfull thoughts day after day
G D
I wish they wouldn?t last
C D
Here?s a story of a young man who
C D
didn?t understand
C D
what his dad was trying to do
C A
with the backside of his hand

CHORUS
D C G D
How was I supposed to know my question was a sin
D C G D
All I said dad is can I go fishin?, go fishin' with Jim

VERSE 2

Before I could finish my last request
He knocked me to the floor
He kicked me hard
He kicked me twice
He kicked me through the door

I stood up fast and I ran to my room
He came right after me
I threw my dresser by the door
as he lost his sanity

CHORUS

How was I supposed to know my question was a sin
All I said Dad is can I go fishin?, go fishin' with Jim

VERSE 3

Three months passed by since that day
memories still alive
I woke up early on a Saturday
just trying to survive

as I was sittin? on the white porch rail
early on that day
My Dad came out and pushed me over
he had to have his way

CHORUS

How was I supposed to know my question was a sin
All I said dad is can I go fishin?, go fishin' with Jim

VERSE 5

Blood came streaming from my head,
my knees and arms and hands,
My pants were torn but I wasn?t dead
as I began to stand

I ran out into the middle of the street
I cursed at him and said
?What?s wrong with you I don?t understand,
you used to be my Dad?

CHORUS

How was I supposed to know my question was a sin
All I said dad is can I go fishin?, go fishin' with Jim

VERSE 6

Well a year and a half went by and I
hadn?t said a word
Not a single sound to my Dad
I wonder if he heard

He talked to me as he said with a tear
?I was wrong back then.?
All I could say after over a year
?I?m goin? fishin' with Jim?

CHORUS

How was I supposed to know my question was a sin
All I said dad is can I go fishin?, go fishin' with Jim
