Molten To The Core

Story Behind The Song

This song came out of the memory of my first date with my girlfriend, who became my wife and mother to my 2 daughters! A car drive to Scarborough, my birth town, on a calm day - looking out on a still sea that blended so seamlessly with the sky you had to work hard to spot where the horizon was - telling her for the first time I loved her - and pondering if this love would turn into something like the view before us, that classic union where lives become so intertwined they can no longer be seen as separate, the line of demarcation becomes so blurred. That's the theme running through this song, the idea that two lives can be fused together as with molten steel worked into a join to solder two parts together.

Lyrics

We take the road to the north-east
As the crow flies
'Til the last bend at the journey's end,
And there it is: a sea of glass
And a deep calm,
Like it somehow tapped into our spirits.

And I am centred, I am sent -
No sentiment so deeply meant;
I sense ourselves in the reflection.

We stare out at the ocean as deeper friends.
We can't see where the sky starts or the sea ends;
Could that be you and me now, you and me now?

In these holy encounters, these heart-to-hearts,
The line blurs where my soul ends, your spirit starts,
Reaching new states - like rich ore
Molten to the core.

More elemental than the sea:
Something deeper -
A communion old as Eve and Adam;
More than the sum of you and me;
A completeness
No conjoining part alone can muster.

And this is holy, this is whole:
My spirit soldered to your soul,
And stronger far for the connection.

In these holy encounters, these heart-to-hearts,
The line blurs where my soul ends, your spirit starts,
Reaching new states - like rich ore
Molten to the core.

A picture postcard, living art
Only God's paintbrush could impart,
The colours bleeding to a sunset.
