Song Description

A songwriter has written dozens of hit songs for big-name artists only to have them rejected by the publishing companies. This is the product of his frustration.

Story Behind the Song

After a grueling song critique session, I came away feeling like a pretty crappy songwriter. I was so frustrated that I decided that if it was true, by God, I was gonna take it and run with it. Out popped this song.

Lyrics

Songwriter Blues © 2011 David W. Folsom

I've written songs for Kenny Rogers
Merle Haggard and George Jones
Dolly Parton, Toby Keith and Rascal Flats
You know I've paid my dues, and I sure love to hear good news
But the publishers keep sending them all back

Now, there's one thing I've learned in all my years of writing songs
If I can't write 'em right, I sure can write 'em wrong
I've used every cliche at least once or maybe twice
Worn-out melodies and phrases that are trite

I've got the frustrated songwriter blues
The kind you feel down deep inside your shoes
I've got plenty of words from which to choose
But my songs all get wrecked 'coz I only select
The worst ones I can possibly use

This song is a hit with an "s" in front of it
Headed straight for the bottom with a bullet
You're listening to it now, 'coz it leaked out, somehow
And I hope the record company won't pull it

I've got the frustrated songwriter blues
The kind you feel down deep inside your shoes
I've got plenty of notes from which to choose
But my songs all get wrecked 'coz I only select
The worst ones I can possibly use

Bridge: I can't keep a song under 5 minutes long
I've got way too much to say before I'm through
I'm just a fool 'coz I keep breakin' all the rules
And sometimes I don't even try to rhyme

It's too fast, it's too slow
It's too high or it's too low
It's too short or it's too long
But they're talkin' 'bout the same dang song

I've got the frustrated songwriter blues
The kind you feel down deep inside your shoes
I've got plenty of chords from which to choose
But my songs all get wrecked 'coz I only select
The worst ones I can possibly use

I've got the sappy, oh, so crappy,
Downright unhappy
Deep, depressin' songwriter blues
