Sweet Estella (Deal Me In)

Story Behind The Song

This song is part of an album that I wrote following a traumatic breakup that I went through. The album is intended to tell the story of the breakup and the emotions that accompanied it. Sweet Estella is a song later in the album. It likens my situation to that of Pip's in Great Expectations, and includes my own feelings and discoveries.

Song Description

This song was inspired by the character Estella from Dickens' Great Expectations. Estella was trained from the time she was a child to seduce men and ultimately break their hearts. In the story, Pip the main protagonist falls in love with Estella, and pursues her against all thought and reason. Even after she tells him that she is incapable of love he still cannot help but love her. The song takes the vantage point of one who loves someone against all reason and logic, accepts the fact, and commits to their feelings. "Deal me in Sweet Estella" is basically saying "This makes no sense, but I can't help how I feel, so deal me in"

Lyrics

Beyond the trees, the brewery, holds secrets lost in sullen memory. The fallen leaves, and evergreens, recall our broken scenes.

Estella sits in lonely meditation, her garden full of fears. She won't tell me but I feel it when I ask her

Deal me in, Sweet Estella, I hear what you say, but I know all your ways and the games you play. Dealing cards, trumping hearts Estella, our love will forever be grey.

I'll sit and wait, outside the gate, delinquent action coming too late. I call her name, her sweet refrain, just causes further pain.

She turns to make her way across the garden, to deal my final blow. And she won't tell me but I feel it when I ask her

Deal me in, Sweet Estella, I hear what you say, but I know all your ways and the games you play. Dealing cards, trumping hearts Estella, our love will forever be grey.

Someday, some how, you'll know. I hope, on your wedding day it snows.

Deal me in, Sweet Estella, I hear what you say, but I know all your ways and the games you play. Dealing cards, trumping hearts Estella, our love will forever be grey.
