Story Behind The Song
This was written in Phoenix, AZ directly after and in response to the 2000 presidential election.
Song Description
Like the anti-racism song "Strange Fruit," Mercury is a veiled political commentary. The main character takes responsibility for his political apathy while questioning how society could have become so mad.

You - you've no idea what you're doing
Do you?
You're
Reckless and out of control
Please stop
I let this happen
You are so deadly
You're the next enemy
What we need is an antihero
Sad in the shower
He would show us our one fatal flaw
And we'd be applauding
I bought my ticket and I'll stand on my seat
I'm the one creaming
Tell them there's mercury in the water
And we've all gone mad
Make up something believable quickly
They're coming soon
We had something important to say
But they got the trademark
And if you told me that nothing exists
I'd happily believe it
