Waiting For A Sign

Story Behind The Song

The song was written about a real-life situation in the summer of 1993. It was inspired by Pink Floyd and Elton John, and it contains a chordal reference to Floyd's "Two Suns in the Sunset," and a lyrical reference to Elton's "Burn Down the Mission." The song was first performed on live radio, on the original "Opie and Anthony" show on WBAB, Long Island, in August 1993. It has been a staple of my live performances ever since. The song was recorded with sparse instrumentation in NYC 2000. It was released on my 2002 CD, Broken English Poem.

Lyrics

"Waiting For A Sign"
words and music by Doug Yoel

I can't tell what she is thinking
And I don't know what she sees
It reminds me of a movie
Where the man falls down in love
And falls down on his knees

Friend I see you like a vision
In a dream
In a daylight fantasy
Like a child who has just burned down the mission
I am running
Through the night so wantonly

And I'm waiting, waiting, waiting
Waiting on a sign from you

I know all about her passion
But I know nothing of her past
I've been wondering what she's doing
But I'm too afraid - too afraid to ask

Friend I see you like a vision
In a dream
In a daylight fantasy
Like a child who has just burned down the mission
I am running
Through the night so wantonly

And I'm waiting, waiting, waiting
Waiting on a sign from you

Things like this don't happen everyday to a simple man like me
It feels to good to let it slip away, but what will be will be
I try so hard to make my mark
But who am I to think I can
Fading out and falling fast
I am just a fallen man
And I'm waiting, waiting, waiting
Waiting on a sign from you
