Gotta Get Ta Work On Time

Story Behind The Song

After running construction crews and ownning my own businesses for years, it seemed to be a common theme with employees: "Ya gotta get ta work on time." Since it is such a common problem for some young folks, I thought someone should write a song about it.

Song Description

This is a song about the need to put some of our other favorite things aside when it comes time to making our bosses happy enough to keep employing us. The fellow in the song has a terrible work record and ultimately gets fired from his job because he spends too much time at the restaurant flirting with the waitresses, eating donuts and drinking coffee.

Lyrics

Gotta Get Ta Work On Time

(Well) I was sittin? in the coffee shop
A talkin? to my buddies
Havin? breakfast with a friend of mine

I was checkin? out the faces
Of all the cutie waitresses
And handin? ?em my very best lines

When all of a sudden
My Waitress told me somethin?
An? it started ringin? in my head
?Boy, if you?re late to work just
One more time, You?re dead?

Well, I gotta get ta work,
I gotta get ta work, I gotta get ta
Gotta get ta work on time

I gotta pay my rent
Before my money?s all spent
An? I?m a down to my last thin dime

My wallet?s gettin? thin,
From the sorry shape I?m in
I?m runnin? low on my credit line
So I really gotta get
Man I gotta get ta work on time

It?s s?pose to take a lickin
But, my Timex wasn?t tickin?
I asked, ?What time is it s?posed to be??

She said ?Man you better go
?Cause that whistle?s gonna blow
Then you?ll have to come to work for me?

So I jumped up from my table
Grabbed my donut and my coffee
And right on out the door I flew

Sayin? ?Might be a chance
I can get an advance
so I can leave a big tip for you?

Well, I gotta get ta work
I gotta get ta work, I gotta get ta
Gotta get ta work on time

I gotta pay my rent
Before my money?s all spent
An? I?m a down to my last thin dime

My wallet?s gettin? thin
From the sorry shape I?m in
I?m runnin? low on my credit line
So I really gotta get
Man I gotta get ta work on time

When I got to work I knew
That ol? workin whistle blew
An' I figured I was late for shore

I wasn?t into pleadin?, so
The one thing I was needin?
An excuse I never used before

So I went up to the boss
He said ?Son, I?m at a loss,
You?ve been late to work every day
I?ve just got one last thing to say?

Well, ya gotta get ta work,
Ya gotta get ta work, ya gotta get ta
Gotta get ta work on time

With your tardiness abuse
And your crazy lame excuses
Your record aughta be a crime

You know it isn?t funny
?Cause I can?t make any money
I ain?t payin? you one more dime
Maybe this?ll teach ya, Son
Ya gotta get ta work on time

Well, I gotta get ta work
I gotta get ta work, I gotta get ta
Gotta get ta work on time

I gotta pay my rent
Before my money?s all spent
An? I?m a down to my last thin dime

My wallet?s gettin? thin
From the sorry shape I?m in
I?m runnin? low on my credit line
So I really gotta get
Man I gotta get ta work on time

So I really gotta get
Man I gotta get ...
Hey, is that a jelly donut?
A donut?
Oh, I like jelly donuts!
Oh man, you haven't learned nothin'!
