Now we sat in our brightness just stuck with the glaze of confusion of what were we studying this for
Our books right in front just excuses for any conversation that could be had
And yesterday's coffee in ancient ceramics caressed by the thousands of mouths from that town
Was never too good but it still was a gift to the lost and the living we were
There were characters oddly beguiling who came through those doors like a cuckoo clock turning its gears
There were upper crust statesmen and dreadlocked purveyors of incense and djembes and dancing
And we never got much done but mostly just needed the cheer from a blue collar story in smiles
And that place had a sugary white noisy balance of comfort and grime and diversion

And right down the road we would crowd ourselves thick in the darkly lit chamber of chaos and beer
And the bands would start late but we sure were awake as we cowered in need of redemption
So they'd turn up their amps just as loud as they could and they'd bleed us their sonic frustrations
And we lapped up the smoke and the sweat of distorted love there, yes we were there

Now I came back to town 'cause the sun kinda pointed me there in a timid veiled orangy hue
Drove my car by the tractors and dialed up the numbers of any friends I could remember
But I couldn't reach anyone, think they were lost in the static of newscasters, billboards, and blogs
So I waved and I drove to what I used to know as my home
