Soldier Boy

Story Behind The Song

This song was written for my U.S. Marine son who was going off to fight in the recent war in Iraq. His recon unit led the war, faced many ambushes and scores of combat. As a decorated war hero my son Noah made it back to his base in CA only to be the passenger in a near-fatal car accident, a spinal cord injury has left him paralyzed from his chest down? This might possibly be the most meaningful song I will ever pen. Thanks go to Klaus K. and Eliza G. for co-writing something that has turned out to be so ironic.. At the time we were so afraid for him fighting the war, indeed some wars are never won... Di Currier

Lyrics

SOLDIER BOY

V1
Hurry, come play
he said with that boyish grin.
Cammies and boots
A coonskin hat too big for him.
Bang, bang, you're dead
I held my chest and staggered
I did my best
to look shot down and haggard.

CHORUS
Soldier boy, - G. I. Joe
you're precious, don't you know?
Fighting evil, fighting hate
who knew this would be your fate?
Careful out there my son,
some wars are never won.

V2
Superman Cape
To camouflage at Halloween
High school football
The best cornerback I've ever seen.
Graduation day
from classroom to the Corps
humbled but strong
from soldier boy to warrior

CHORUS
Soldier boy, - G. I. Joe
you're precious, don't you know?
Fighting evil, fighting hate
who knew this would be your fate?
Careful out there my son,
some wars are never won.

BRIDGE
Our first 18 years just flew,
each day I fear & pray for you.
Because your weapon's not a toy,
Ooh, I long for you when you were a boy.

V3
Handshakes and hugs
friends are there to say goodbye.
Hold your brother
then do the same for Dad and I.
How my heart aches
it's killing me to let you go.
Pray you come back
my brave son, my G.I. Joe

CHORUS
Soldier boy, - G. I. Joe
you're precious, don't you know?
Fighting evil, fighting hate
who knew this would be your fate?
Careful out there my son,
some wars are never won
