Step Back

Story Behind The Song

I wrote and recorded this for my 12 year old daughter. She's been worrying about things beyond her immediate child life, things concerning money and life in general. I reassure her that everything will be fine, that she's too young to be concerned about stuff like that, and that she should just focus on being a kid. So I wrote this to amplify the point. The title is "Step Back". I used this because when we were in D.C. this past summer, we heard a recording of a woman's voice over the loudspeaker in the subway that kept saying "Step...BACK!" when the trains were approaching the platform. We thought it was hilarious and even say it to each other from time to time, complete with giggles. So I thought it would be a good metaphor for stepping back away from the barreling train of adult concerns that she's trying to get on too early in life and into the arms of love and safety that I (and others) provide her as a child

Lyrics

You go to bed but you just can't sleep
Your head is full of so many things
You are thinking 'bout the world around you
You don't take time to laugh or sing

You're twelve years old and it's hard enough
You don't need thoughts about that other stuff
Music, friends and school should be your focus
But most of all just think about love

You bring joy to everyone
Every day you see the sun
Don't you worry 'bout anyone
Just think about having fun

Step back from the train that's rolling
It's not time for you to ride
Step back into arms that love you
And only let the good inside

You hear concerns about grown up things
But don't you worry 'bout what they mean
Everything will work out and will be fine
So take some time to laugh and sing.

You bring joy to everyone
Every day you see the sun
Don't you worry 'bout anyone
Just think about having fun

Step back from the train that's rolling
It's not time for you to ride
Step back into arms that love you
And only let the good inside
