Story Behind The Song

The film is set in an imaginary country but much of the story is inspired by real events that took place before and during the invasion of Norway by the Nazis in 1940 and the subsequent occupation of the country through to 1945.

Song Description

The story is set in Homeland, a country not unlike Norway during World War II. The patriotic song Our Homeland has been introduced earlier in the film and the track here opens with a brief reminder of the tune, played on the guitar. The main character Kristina has inherited a musical box which features the same tune. She opens the musical box as the occupying army moves in and the fragile theme plays on over the top, despite all efforts of the strident sounds of the invasion to drown it out.
