Bringing Down the House
By Dave McDonald | 1242 Covered Bridge Drive| Madison, VA 22727|540-948.4243
(Verse I)
It was a little white house,
On the edge of town,
Grandpa?s place on highway 42,
Back when I was a young?n,
All the uncles aunts and cousins,
Would gather there on Sunday afternoon,
After dinner we would listen,
As Grandpa did renditions,
Of those Jimmy Rodgers songs from long ago,
It was a time we?d come to know,
As the Grandpa Opry Show.
(Chorus)
And he was bring down the house,
Raising the roof,
Music rang out,
Through every room,
Didn?t matter that,
A few notes were flat,
And the guitar was a little out of tune,
Everybody clapped, when he got through,
He was bringing down the house.
(Verse II)
That old roof would sag,
But I?d hear Grandpa brag,
They don?t build em?, like this one anymore,
When I?d see that place I?d miss him,
Hear him pickin in the kitchen,
Even though he?s been gone since 84,
In my life I have listened,
To all kinds of musicians,
I?ve heard Country, Rock and Roll and R&B,
But none of them inspired me,
Like Grandpa playing for the family.
(Chorus)
He was bring down the house,
Raising the roof,
Music rang out, though every room,
Didn?t matter that,
A few notes were flat,
And the guitar was a little out of tune,
Everybody clapped,
When he got through,
When he was bringing down the house.
(Bridge)
That house stayed in our family ,
And finally made it?s way to me,
I did what I knew Grandpa?d want me to,
I fought in court but lost the case,
They made me sell em? Grandpa?s place,
So they could widen Highway 42,
And there was nothing I could do.
(Chorus)
They were bring down the house,
Razing the roof,
Flat to the ground, room by room,
As that old house fell,
I said farewell,
To its reminders of my youth,
A radio there,
Played a Jimmy Roger?s tune,
While they were bringing down the house.
