Story Behind The Song
"Fly Away" works completely as a heartbreaking ballad of lost love. Many listeners (to the CD and to live performances at concerts) have interpreted the song as such - the end of a meaningful love affair.
And, in one sense, that was the origin of the song. However, for both Lina and myself (the writers), "Fly Away" was not about a failed romance. It was about the loss of a life partner to illness.
My dad and Lina's mom both died after lengthy bouts with cancer. The song is sung from the perspective of the survivor.
Nevertheless, the feelings of loneliness and lost love in "Fly Away" rest just as easily on the shoulders of a broken relationship between two lovers, and we hope you will find the song in some way meaningful to you as well as suitable for this placement opportunity.
Musically yours,
Dan Gross
Song Description
Intense, haunting and heart-wrenching ballad, both musically and lyrically.
Though sung with an underlying strength of will - an "I'm letting you go and I'll get through this" attitude, the sense of the devastating loss of a loved one comes through loud and clear, whether listening casually or with focus.
It is at once confessional, sorrowful and accepting.
The Verse melody is calm, sad and conversational, while the Chorus melody soars.
The track (Piano, Bass, Drums and Acoustic Guitar) is mesmerizing, open and enveloping.

Lyrics
[VERSE 1]
With just a sigh
You tell me that you love me
Past the pain
I force a smile to ease my mind
And break this hurt in two
So you can do what lovers do
[CHORUS]
Fly away now
Let it go
Go on and disappear
Any day now
When it's over
It's all over
You can rest here in my arms
I've got these arms
[VERSE 2]
Close your eyes
A bittersweet surrender
I'm right here
Holding your tender hands in mine
Hands that once were sure and strong
What will I do when they are gone
[CHORUS]
[BRIDGE]
When everybody's fast asleep
And angels take our souls
To keep them warm
Take heart
Take wing
(And) fly away
