Lonely Woman (from the "Live" CD, "Black & White")

Song Description

Inspired by a true story. I was on tour and a woman in the next room was distraught and crying, so loud anyone could have heard it. Someone actually called the front desk and then I heard a commotion in the hallway, where the woman was weeping and talking

I heard a lonely woman crying through the wall
To be alone can be a pleasure, but loneliness haunts us all
The woman strummed on silver strings
Sang songs of wonderful things
And of the joy that love brings
Her lover left and the loneliness stings
Out on the streets she looks over her shoulder
God, she look so much older
She lets her hair rest quietly
She lets it down nightly
She wonders why it made her cry
After all the times, she?s heard him lie
Oh, why, why, why
The flags are flying upside down
From the crosses on the hill
The steps of the dancer
And the songs of waking
Are suddenly very still
Their nation of two, their sanctuary
Grew silver wings and flew away
Her brown eyes are red and gray and blue
The bond she dreamed of as a little daydreamer
The games of making up children?s names
Her prince charming
Turned out to be very alarming
Oh, will her life
Will her life ever be the same.
Oh, there are so many noble men
With noble words to say
But, their words and their thoughts
Oh, they go in so many different ways
But, never in the same direction
No, never in the same direction
I saw a lonely woman
Walking through the park
Leda and the swan made love on the lawn
So we joined hands and took turns singing songs
The woman strummed on silver strings
Sang songs of wonderful things
And of the joy that love brings
He lover left and the loneliness stings
She lets her hair rest quietly
She lets it down just for me
She lets it down every night
She lets it down just for me
She wonders why her cry
After all the times she?s heard him lie
Oh, why, why, why
Oh, why, why, why

Good song. Reminds me of a Who song crossed with an Emerson, Lake and Palmer song.

Love the start - excellent guitar/string work. Beautiful vocal - giving me chills as I listen... gorgeous. Lyrics are excellent. Melody/vocals make a wonderful counterpoint to the stronger, edgy guitar. This is really well-balanced and skilful songwriting. Would also make great soundtracking for anything documenting 1960s/America's folk.

Here's a live recording of an amazing and creative artist. The long and amazing guitar intro made me think it was just going to be an instrumental song and then...surprise! The passionate, dynamo vocals come in. The song is about a lonely girl. Favorite rhyme: Sings, stings. Direction/perfection. The guitar playing was so great and high-energy, I wish I could see a video of this artist playing this song. I am sure he is a festival favorite. I'd certainly go to see his set! I liked the word picture of "letting her hair down for me."

For live performance, this is well done. Great lyrics, excellent instrumentation. Enjoyed it!

Very nice song. Great variety of strumming that correlates perfectly with mood created by what is sung. Lyrics are very nice.

very cool retro David Crosby type tune IMO, guitar excellent, sounds almost like a young Peter Olach or Chet Nichols to me...lyrics complicated by today's standard--WHICH I LIKE! Well recorded, can't tell if the applause is live or dubbed in--well done and powerful, reminds of the good old days! Tull anyone?
