Euphoric Owls

Story Behind The Song

Song Description

Wonderful coincidences involving owls kept occurring with a good friend and myself. We both would see owls on the same day, and later talk about it via phone, because we lived in different towns. This kept happening, and I began a piano piece inspired by these owl coincidences. One day I played her the opening measures over the phone, and she joked that the music sounded like the owls were euphoric. Somehow this comment resonated with me even though one doesn't usually think of owls as being euphoric, and even though the opening bars are in D minor and rather somber. I worked on this piece intermittently for about two years, and, finally, one night around midnight, I finished it, and I left an excited voicemail on her cell. The next time we talked she said earlier in the day on the night I called her, she was driving down a country road in the woods, with her son and daughter in the car, and a white owl flew through the air and landed on the road in front of them, so that they had to stop the car. They all sat in awe and watched the white owl for several minutes until it flew on into the forest.
