Soldier On

Story Behind The Song

I went to Camp LeJeune in North Carolina to see him off. Something about seeing all those guys-kids, really, with machine guns slung over their shoulders and pistols strapped to their hips really hit me. For the first time it was a reality that my brother may not come home, and how brave he and his fellow soldiers were to volunteer to fight for our country.

Song Description

I wrote this song about my brother. He is in the Marine Corps, and had just left for a tour in Iraq. I was scared, worried, nervous...all of the things you feel when someone you love may not come home. I was also fiercely proud, and thought (and still think) he's the bravest, most courageous person I know.

Lyrics

Today I got your first letter
I was wondering how you'd been
And as I read your words,
It occurred to me
You left a boy,
You'd be back a man

(Pre-Chorus)
And I can hardly take it
I can hardly shake it
The thought of you out there
You're my

(Chorus)
Every day
Every way
You're my
Every day hero
(repeat)

You shrug it off like it's no big deal
Like it's every day you go to war
You're out there fightin' for my freedom (what is freedom?)
So I can strum this damn guitar

(Pre-Chorus)
(Chorus)
Yeah!
(Instrumental)
(Cadence from the United States Marine Corps)
"Up in the mornin' way too soon"
"Hungry as hell by noon"
