Remnants

Story Behind The Song

The essence of this song originated from one certain chord shown to me by a friend and very talented fingerstyle guitarist. Due to the ever-increasing business of our daily lives, we found ourselves with fewer opportunities to play together. We were reduced to meeting at a local guitar store during a weekday lunch and playing borrowed instruments. The open voicings he played that day inspired me - and the rest of the song developed over the next few years. The title stems from the many influential pieces that make up the song. Aside from the aforementioned chordal inspiration, I was reminded of a small-venue show featuring guitarist Billy McLaughlin that I saw in Dallas, Texas a few springtimes ago during May, the same time of year this song was completed and recorded. Something about the mild weather and character of this month of the year reminded me of that show, not to mention that a bit of Billy's style is reflected in the piece. Lastly, the inspiration for the verse proved to be a true remnant in and of itself. After writing it, I was intrigued by the odd familiarity of the melody. Had I innocently transposed a piece of another guitarist's work? Unable to place it, I awoke from a dream one morning with the memory of a forgotten rhythmic passage that I had unknowingly composed years before, and came to the realization that I had, in fact, copied myself.
