Story Behind The Song
I wrote the music for the C section first (it's AABAC), but it didn't work on it's own. The opening line "If I gave my hopes a name, I would have to call them fame" was pure inspiration. The song was written to use in a school play, and Lynne Ross, the director, wanted a song for th lead girl. The song was written fairly quickly (for me!!!) but having said that, I've been worrying with it like a dog with a bone for about 6 years. I entered it in the U.S.A. song competition, and didn't even get a mention. Taking a long hard look at the song, I realised it needed a hook. I added "I only want to be a star" 3 more times into the song as a refrain, as that line had previously come only at the end. I'm happy with it now, and hopoe the song gets the success I think it deserves.

Lyrics
I ONLY WANT TO BE A STAR
Music and Lyrics by Bruce Boome
If I gave my hopes a name
Then I?d have to call them fame
I would love to see my name in lights one day.
I?d be worshipped from afar
And dine on Russian caviar
I ONLY WANT TO BE A STAR
Oh how I long for the time when my name is on everyone?s lips
How can I make all my wishes come true?
All the success that I crave waits there hovering just out of my reach
When I move closer it dances away.
I ONLY WANT TO BE A STAR
Nothing ventured, nothing gained
I?ll keep fighting thru the pain
Of rejection, taunts and insults that I face.
I?ve done everything I could
To increase the likelihood
Of becoming everything I?d like to be.
I ONLY WANT TO BE A STAR.
Then I turn on the light
In the middle of the night
I can?t sleep ?cos my life?s not going right.
Do I try too hard?
Have I gone too far?
For I?m not content with the way things are.
I ONLY WANT TO BE A STAR
I ONLY WANT TO BE A STAR
I ONLY WANT TO BE A STAR
