One Sunday morning I stopped at a church
A place I hadn?t been in a while
A few minutes late I sat in the back
The crowd greeted me with a smile
They sang all the songs I knew so well
And a few testified of God?s grace
Then the preacher stood up and read from the Bible
And these are the words he did say

God ain?t a jacket you can take off
And reach for again when you?re cold
You can?t hang up the telephone
When He?s calling and you can?t place Him on hold
He died on the cross but He?ll live in your heart
If you will turn from your sin
Then come rain or shine
Don?t lay Him aside

Well the sermon was simple but I got the message
And I made my way down the aisle
It was just forty feet up to the altar
But it seemed more like a mile
They all gathered ?round me singing and shoutin?
As I knealt on my knees there to pray
And though it?s been years ago, I still remember
The words of the preacher that day
