Sarah on the Spot

Story Behind The Song

Chris wrote the chord progression for the second movement and showed it to John, who played around with it and came up with the first movement. Paul wrote the melody. The "Sarah" in the title refers to the song "Sarah" from the Civil War musical, and acts as a tribute to a friend of the band's that performed this song.

Song Description

The first movement is a seven-bar vamp in 3/4. It contains the melody and sax solo performed by Paul Roth. The second movement is a 5-bar vamp in 4/4 and features group improvisation. The odd-numbered phrases create a feeling of tension. The last bar of each phrase resolves into the first bar of the next.
