Wesley's Song (An Autism Anthem)

Story Behind The Song

Wesley is a vibrant, energetic 8 year old with striking green eyes and a contagious smile. Wesley is also autistic, which means that his social and communication skills are not like those of other 8 year old boys. He can speak just enough words to ask for food or drink, but cannot tell us how he is feeling or why he might be laughing or crying. My wife and I have been on an emotional rollercoaster since the day he was diagnosed, and as each year passes, we realize that he is always going to need our help. That's OK with me, but there is always one question that pops into my head when I look at him, or watch him laughing or playing. Is he happy? I'm assuming he doesn't know anything is wrong with him, but, is he happy? I thought about what I would want Wesley to say to me, if he could talk. Since Wesley loves music, I wrote this song with the hope that this is what he would sing to me.

Lyrics

Wesley's Song
I'm the picture of perfection
Not a worry on my mind
While others have their problems
I can say I'm doing just fine

I'm a song that just might bring you down
Or can lift your spirits high
And although I have know words to sing
My tune will tell you why

There's no need to worry about me
Even though I'm not like you
So come on and face the music
You might even like the tune

I'm not like many others
But who wants to be the same
And though I do have many brothers
We all play a different game

It's my song that gets me through the day
Each and every note showing me the way
And although I might be out of key
It sounds alright to me

TRANSITION

A sweet melody that I keep inside
Just look behind these big bright eyes
I know I was a big surprise
But I'm in your heart so just realize

GUITAR SOLO

There's no need to worry about me
'Cause my laughter it rings true
So come on and face the music
You might even like the tune

So I may just be a bit offbeat
But I'm pretty sure my life's complete
I have everything I need right here
So just hum along and don't shed a tear

I'm a song that just might bring you down
Or lift your spirits off the ground
And though I might not make a sound
If you listen close you'll be glad you found

There's no need to worry about me
I may be better off than you
So come on and face the music
You might even like the tune

Yea come on and face the music
You might even like the tune
