Anybody's Game

Story Behind The Song

I dated a girl for a few weeks in May of 2006 who lived in Chicago. We had a good number of wonderful dates, and I felt like we clicked and was under the impression that she too felt the same. I poured my heart into her, hoping that she would remember me over the summer until she came back and we would once again be together. After she left, I was unable to get ahold of her for a week, and then she dropped a bomb in my e-mail inbox, giving me every known excuse why we wouldn't work out. I was heartbroken, and angry, and immediately wrote this song.

Lyrics

Try to fight back the tears as I watch the train
Leave the station the rain only makes the pain
Seem worse, I'd rather go home in a hearse
Than drive home all alone, just the thought makes me curse

Later, my face in the rear-view looks soggy
I recall last night when the window's were foggy
You assured me that a few months isn't that long
But a part of me keeps thinkin' that you might be wrong

A part of me keeps thinkin' that you might be wrong

CHORUS
You think when you return you'll feel the same
You'll kiss my face and whisper my name
But you'll find its hard to contain the flame
'Cause while you're gone, its anybody's game

I live in a dark void stuck here all alone
You don't answer the phone, the purpose left unknown
I think, should I wait? And the words we spoke late
On our dying date ring straight through my head
But they grate now that the phone rings instead
I lie awake in bed, seein' red, I think I'm being fed
Lies, if I ever see your eyes again
Will they still shine with hope or confess the sin?

Yeah, will your eyes shine with hope or confess the sin?

CHORUS

I thought back then our lives were one
As we walked beneath the moon
It seems you share your world with anyone
The truth is clear as noon
If you can tear up what we had
As if it were a weed
Then you can forget about coming back
You're not the one for me.

CHORUS
