It's Not My Job

Story Behind The Song

I was in a cafe and had the opening discussion with the waitress. The second verse actually ties into the life of my wife and I. She was a single mom, with three boys at home. I have two grown children, a boy and a girl. By our second date, I knew I was going to marry her. At our wedding we were accompanied by our daughter and four sons.

Lyrics

The waitress poured my cup of coffee and laid my menu down
I asked "what's good today?" She said "I don't know, it's my first day on the floor."
"I'm usually the hostess here, but Amy's got the flu
There's hungry people coming in, so I'll do what I've got to do."

It's not my job, I'm only filling in, But I'll do it with a smile I'll, I'll do the best I can
I may not be what you were looking for when you came in here today
It's not my job, but I'll do it anyway

I've got three boys at home the waitress said, so it's a package deal
It was our second date, but my heart said that what we had was real
I've got two kids of my own, and I thought I was done
But then we stood before the preacher with our daughter and four sons
I'm not trying to take anybody's place, I'm not trying to make anybody mad
I'm a friend and I'm a parent, I'm the one they call Step-dad
It's not my job, I'm only filling in I'll do it with a smile I'll, I'll do the best I can
I may not be what they were looking for when I said "I do" that day
It's not my job, but I'll do it anyway
It's not my job, I'm only filling in, but I'll do it with a smile I'll, and I'll do the best I can
I may not be what they were looking for when I said "I do" that day
It's not my job, but I'll do it anyway It's not my job, but I'll do it anyway
yea I thank God, I get to do it anyway
