Traditional Polkas in D (2011)

Story Behind The Song

Polkas originated in Poland and found their way to many countries including Ireland, where they are principally played in the county of Kerry. Many of these dance tunes date back to the 1700's, when Irish folk music was driven underground by harsh English laws.

This medley consists of Bill Sullivan' Polka, Peggy Lettermore, and John Ryan's Polka, with some lyrics for Peggy Lettermore sung in the middle.

O ghuairm í, o ghuairm í, 's ghuairm í go deo,
Sí grá mo chroí, mo bhumin í, sí Peigín Leitirmor.

O ghuairm í, o ghuairm í, 's ghuairm í go deo,
Sí grá mo chroá, mo bhumin í, sí Peigín Leitirmór.

Tá Brid, tá Cáit agam, ach Peig an bean is fearr,
'Ceb faer Gheabhfas í nach air a bhfeás anttadh.

Tá Brid, tá Cáit agam, ach Peig an bean is fearr,
'Ceb faer Gheabhfas í nach air a bhfeás anttadh.
